Our story
A girl called Bookworm
She was four, in her middle year of kindergarten. One ordinary afternoon, we put on Spirited Away in English. She sat quietly in front of the screen, completely still.
She could not follow every line, yet she understood the whole story. In that moment we realized: children do not learn a language first and then understand the world. They learn the language because they want to understand the world. From that day on, English cartoons and English picture books were with her every day. For her, English was never a subject to be tested on. It was a doorway into another world.
So many parents know the worry: words memorized and forgotten, and a child who still will not speak. But none of us memorized our mother tongue. We listened first, then understood, and only then spoke. English is the same. When a child spends every day inside stories and the world, the language quietly takes root. In Grade 8 she took the American MAP reading test and scored higher than more than half of American students her age, even though English was her second language. That was when we truly understood how powerful English immersion can be.
Now we want to bring the best of English immersion to the children of today. Not through rote memorizing, not through endless drills, but by letting children grow up inside English. This school is named after her.
Learn the world. English follows.
